AEMcAteer Design - Meet the Maker
Andrew McAteer - A seventh generation New Yorker with a background in woodworking and sailing, Andrew produces everything in his studio in Astoria. When traveling, he found that the available bags, carriers and accessories on the market didn't properly suit his on-the-go gear requirements, and so he began to design and make his own goods. He strives to create beautiful, functional products that suit his needs, and by extension, that others might also find useful.
"A.E.McAteer Design is a small workshop in NYC that works in leather, canvas, metal and wood. It's been in business since 2012, and everything is made on the premises. My personal favourite products are the house shoes, and I'm always experimenting with new patterns or construction techniques. I'm hoping to expand into shoemaking."

Andrew found the pattern for these in the Library of Congress. It was printed in a ladies magazine during the Civil War. Women who wanted to help out with the war effort would sew them from scraps they had lying around and sent them to the United States Sanitary Commission for distribution in hospitals for wounded soldiers.
They're made with top grain leather uppers, 100% wool lining between the sole and insole for comfort. The vegetable tanned leather insole is antimicrobial to cut down on odour, and to reduce waste. Andrew uses scraps left over from his toolboxes and bowls to make them.
When designing a new slipper for his boat Myrmidon, Andrew set out to improve his leather house shoe and make it travel well… this is the result. Moccasin construction, with only three seams and a fitted leather case with a zipper.
